iPhone madness

« previous entry | next entry »

(Apologies in advance for torturing [info]mdg1 with this entry.)

So I woke up this morning expecting to be greeeted by delightful sunlight; the cries of birds; and warm, fuzzy emails assuring me of the wonders of the weekend.

Those warm, fuzzy emails?

Three. Separate. Emails. announcing a change in phone number because you now have iPhones. (And adding to the fun, as far as I know, at least, the three of you don't even know each other.)

The madness continues. Any chance of this bringing down the price of an iTouch sometime soon?

My phone number is, alas, exactly the same. Then again, I don't particularly want an i-phone so I'm not exactly upset over the lack.

If it weren't for chattycatsmeow's comment, I would have started to think that I'm the only one who couldn't care less about those iphones.

...

Actually, if I were offered one, I wouldn't take it. When I pick a phone, I go by, "What does it cost? And what does one cost that doesn't have 100 000 features I don't need? Plus, of course, all those ongoing expenses like contracts and such.?"

My cellphone, which I wouldn't have if I weren't self-employed, has a telephone function and a text function, and it's a prepaid. That's all I need, that's all I want.

This iphone hysteria is a complete bafflement to me.

Oh, I can see the appeal of an iPhone, and if it weren't for financial constraints, I might be getting one -- that GPS function, combined with the internet maps, would be incredibly useful to me. (Especially right now, after moving to a section of central Florida that I don't know all that well -- I know the theme park areas, but that's not where I'm living.) And the iPhone is damn cool looking.

That said, I'm with [info]fbhjir below -- I'd rather have the iTouch, and avoid the entire phone contract madness. Like you, my cell phone is one of those prepaid deals, and I make my other phone calls through the internet. (And for those of you reading this squeaking, "SO COULD YOU FORWARD YOUR ORLANDO NUMBER ALREADY" it's coming, it's coming -- I had to get the Acer computer fixed first.)

But these last two posts have been more meant as amused commentary than anything else.

I have my cellphone so that people can call me, and I use a landline (I know, so very 20th century) for when I need to make a call. It's a combined internet/phone flatrate.

Some months ago, someone wanted to sell me a cell phone flatrate: every month 100 minutes for €10.--.

It didn't work out because I don't even talk 100 minutes *a year* on the phone. I just hate phones. I always think that whoever I'm calling has more important things to do than talk to me on the phone. Just like I'm usually busy with more important things when I get a (non-business) phone call.

Alas, a landline here would cost us too much money. It's a pity, because should a hurricane roll through here, we'd be better off with a landline -- but even combined, my pay per minute cell phone, skype and the magicjack will cost less than the landline.

With one exception, I don't talk that much on the phone -- but that one exception and I do talk pretty extensively :) So I have to have an unlimited minutes sort of thing for her use, or give up the friendship -- and her friendship is absolutely worth the unlimited minutes. (Now, if I can get her to start instant messaging....)

Hurricanes are the one reason I kept my landline though I don't have long distance on it - I use my cell for that. Back in 2004 when we had 4 hurricanes roll through in about 4 weeks, the place was a mess. After one of the storms we lost power for 5 days and even though the ex and I were on two different cell companies, neither of us had cell service. The only thing still working was that landline.

The landline costs like $20 or $25 a month but I'm keeping it for now.

:: nods :: The same thing happened with Hurricane Wilma in South Florida -- power was dead, and my cell phone worked, but had no signal.

I'm fairly certain that my cellphone will die after a hurricane here as well but [info]tgregoryt should be fine, and as long as one of us can communicate, we're in decent shape :)

There are a lot of features that the iPhone has that I wish my Treo had, but there are enough things I don't like about it that I'm not even tempted to switch.

I think the i-phone is cool as heck and has loads of really nifty stuff. Part of me would love to have one for the Cool Factor. It's the fact that I don't have any real need for one the way other folks do that means I'm not missing out.

I want an iTouch! More than an iPhone. I don't want AT&T....

Ditto. I love the iTouch. If I'm able to head up to conventions next year, I am so getting one.

And seriously hoping that all of this excitement over the iPhone leads to either a massive drop in iTouch prices ($499 for the 32 gig is alas, out of my budget right now) or the rumoured 64 gig iTouch model....

I already have AT&T, and since it's basically my primary phone (I rarely use my landline), I don't care about contracts and things. I just want immediate Internet gratification :D
