Freddying!

gottalovethepandas
My post about Freddy and the Ignormus is up at Tor.com, with some spelling issues on my part, gulp.

I swear, I thought this was just going to be a silly series of books about a talking pig. I was not expecting a pro-war propaganda bit from a pig and a rooster, written before Pearl Harbor.

In completely unrelated news, my nose has been attacked by an alien, which makes it just as well that I don't have many plans for Memorial Day weekend -- that, and some models are suggesting that the current mess of rain and clouds and wind over the Bahamas may decide to spin up, take in some of the marvelous sunshine and warm waters of the Atlantic, and march in over Jacksonville and down to this area late in the weekend, hopefully saving the roses from their current state of death. (They go in and out of it.)

I keep forgetting to tell you, one thing that you can try with your roses is putting crushed up eggshells around the base. This puts calcium in the soil and keeps away some pests.

I have actually done that. I've also done the coffee ground thing. Neither seems to be that helpful.

Unfortunately that area doesn't have much actual soil - more sand. We've been adding mulch and compost, so eventually it will have soil, but it isn't in a state of soil yet.

When the roses do pop up they have really gorgeous blooms. But it's definitely an up and down thing, and it always only seems to be just one of the bushes at a time.

Sandy soil + roses? Drag home seaweed & put that around the base. We had scarily vigorous rosa rugosas from that.

Heh. I no longer live close enough to a beach to do that easily. But if I ever make it to a beach again....

All the pigs and roosters where I grew up were "Bomb, bomb Iran" types. I usually hung out with the cows.

In the case of this book, the cow led the army. So much for the placid nature of cows....

Oh, see now that's just gotta be bull!

Heh :)

Though that brings up another point -- all of the cows on the farm are decidedly Mrs. Cows. Mrs. Wiggins. Mrs. Wogus. And so on. And yet, so far the books haven't had a single MR. Wiggins, or any other bull. I am deeply suspicious.

Hurricanes
More likely that whatever system forms will add dry air to Central Floria's airmass. See http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/tatl/flash-wv.html. Bummer - because I'm about out of water.

Re: Hurricanes
Maybe...according to the latest special outlook, some of the models, and some National Weather Service reports, a high pressure system may shove this system back into north or central Florida -- or, well, Georgia or the Carolinas. I'm going with "it's still too early to tell" since I'm not seeing a model consensus or a National Hurricane Center consensus.

I'm more confident Bud will be hitting Mexico this weekend.
